    The Upjohns and Gilmores unite in marriage, business: Martha Parfet book chronicles prominent Kalamazoo families

    Editor's note: This is the second of three parts from Linda S. Mah's interview with Martha Parfet about her new book chronicling two of Kalamazoo's most renowned families, the Upjohns and Gilmores.

    KALAMAZOO, MI — For Martha Gilmore Parfet, the history of Kalamazoo is family history.

    Her grandparents were founders of two of Kalamazoo's key business ventures in the 20th century: The Upjohn Co. and Gilmore Brothers department store.

    Parfet has written a two-volume family history. Throughout the book, she documents business growth and development at The Upjohn Co., but it's also the story of family life, school friends, trips, summers in Gull Lake, marriages, new babies and losses.

    The two-volume book, titled "Keep the Quality Up," taken from an Upjohn Co. motto, is for sale for $45 at the Kalamazoo Nature Center, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the Gilmore Car Museum. Proceeds from the sales will support those institutions. It also will be sold at Irving's Marketplace, with those proceeds benefiting the KIA.
