Ben-Gurion, Epilogue Avi Shilon Foreword 1 In the years after David Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of the State of Israel there were three separate instances in which he surprisingly announced his resignation. The first time was when he left the post of prime minister in 1953 and settled in Kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev. He wanted then to recharge his mental resources and to present himself as a personal model for the reclamation of the desert. He also wanted to develop new ways of bestowing the pioneer spirit to the young generation. But concerns over defense matters made him resume the premiership after two years. In June 1963, at the age of seventy-seven, he retired once more from the premiership. By now he was thoroughly exhausted after decades of public activities and preferred to leave the management of current affairs to his successor Levi Eshkol. But he thought that the goals of Zionism had not been completely fulfilled by establishing the state of Israel and that the struggle to buttress the nation must go on, and therefore he wanted to educate the leadership and the people in maintaining the ideals of pioneering and mamlachtiut (statism: the principle marking the shift f
