  • My Sister Roseanne: The True Story of Roseanne Barr Arnold

    January 6,
Through this surprisingly well-written celebrity biography, I gained such an admiration for Roseanne. The back-story of Roseanne's fame is truly interesting and has a surprising amount of depth that is less immediately apparent in her TV show. Her sister details their growing up in mormon-country Utah as Jews and the result is an almost ethnographic-style depiction of a community. As adults, she and Roseanne, who are both active in feminist circles, create a year plan to together launch Roseanne's comedic career. Well, and the rest, as they say, is history. Unfortunately, in the last 1/4 of the book, her rage at Roseanne is palpable as she details how their falling out over Roseanne's version of their family history (Roseanne accused her parents of sexual abuse). It is clear that she is very angry and very heartbroken, and after the beautiful descriptions of their almost life-long sisterly solidarity I found this section too difficult too read. Still, the first 3/4 of the book were certainly worth it; I found their feminist context and convictions deeply compelling.
