Michel de Nostredame (December – July [1]), usually Latinised as Nostradamus,[a] was a French astrologer, apothecary, physician, and reputed seer, who is best known for his book Les Prophéties (published in ), a collection of [b] poetic quatrains allegedly predicting future events.
Nostradamus's father's family had originally been Jewish, but had converted to Catholic Christianity a generation before Nostradamus was born. He studied at the University of Avignon, but was forced to leave after just over a year when the university closed due to an outbreak of the plague. He worked as an apothecary for several years before entering the University of Montpellier, hoping to earn a doctorate, but was almost immediately expelled after his work as an apothecary (a manual trade forbidden by university statutes) was discovered. He first married in , but his wife and two children died in during another plague outbreak. He worked against the plague alongside other doctors before remarrying to Anne Ponsarde, with whom he had six children. I really wanted to like this book more than I did, but I can't justify any rating over 3 stars.
I love reading books about conspiracies, UFOs, paranormal situations and the like, so this title certainly piqued my interest. I purchased it a few months ago before the US Presidential elections and finally had a chance to read it. By the time I reached quatrain 8/15 boldly claiming the outcome of the election (Hillary Clinton would win according to the author's interpretation) I became very suspicious.
The book starts with 16 plus pages consisting of an introduction, a preamble, and a biographical note. Right away, I sensed that the author was already spinning excuses as to why some of the quatrains in the previous editions of this book were off. He also bragged about some of the others coming true, while even laying blame on himself for being off by a few years. "I meant to write , not " for quatrain 8/28 (the financial crisis/recession). I also took note that he has revised this book twice since its release in once in , and again in (the edition I have).
