The first tells about Lincoln&#;s life from childhood to approx. age The second gives a brief overview of Abe&#;s childhood and focuses more on his adult life. Both of these books are used in Beautiful Feet guides. They are quality, readable, living books.

Also, I just have to say, after studying Lincoln, I highly, highly recommend reading Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt. It&#;s an extremely well done historic fiction novel set during the Civil War. I have thought about it many times since finishing the book as a read aloud to our kiddos. I look forward to reading it again someday with our younger son!

I bought this book at the Huntington Library not realizing it was aimed at young readers – my fault! The use of "Abraham" and "Mary" to refer to Mr and Mrs Lincoln, when talking about their marriage, was a bit off-putting but understandable.

This is not a bad introduction to Lincoln's life for young readers. It appears to be well researched, with an extensive bibliography and list of sources cited. However, a few glaring errors should be noted for future editions:

• p. 52 Abolitionist Charles Sumner, beaten to within an inch of his life by a congressman from South Carolina, was of course a Northern, not a Southern senator (!)

• p. 86 Not sure why a contraction has been introduced into the Gettysburg address ("We're met on a great battlefield ")

• p. the text is discussing the Hampton Roads peace conference, but the illustration is of the "Peacemakers" meeting between Union generals Grant and Sherman, Lincoln, and Admiral Porter – some unfortunate confusion here

• p. the text mentions "black citizens" paying their respects at Lincoln's coffin in ; however, the 14th Amendment wasn't ratified until (!).

The book did contain some information and photographs that were new to me. It took me longer to finish it than it should have, b/c s
